BREAKING NEW : CRISTIANO RONALDO SUSPENDED AFTER SHOVING REFEREE
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for five games for shoving referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea during Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Barcelona in the Super Cup on Sunday.
The Real Madrid superstar only appeared in yesterday’s game for 24 minutes as a substitute but he scored an incredible go ahead goal in the 80th minute which broke a 1-1 tie. Ronaldo removed his shirt while celebrating the goal, which warranted a yellow card.
Shortly after that booking, De Burgos Bengoetxea ruled that Ronaldo dove while trying to draw a penalty which resulted in another yellow and him being sent off the field. He responded by shoving the ref, thus the five game ban that was announced today.
If the team doesn’t appeal and the suspension is upheld, Ronaldo will miss the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona as well as Madrid’s four opening La Liga games against Deportivo La Coruna, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad.
Additionally, the Royal Spanish Football Federation fined Ronaldo €3,805 for his actions. To put it in perspective, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, that’s like fining an average American $1.69.
